Do morning pages need to happen in the morning?  I’m asked this question almost every time I present the idea of “morning pages.”  Julia Cameron calls them morning pages because…well, morning.  Our subconscious thoughts are closest to the surface when we first awaken and if you’re doing soul work on the pages, knowing what your subconscious is cooking up is powerful information.

That being said, if you’re not making pages, then pages aren’t working their magic for you.  I say “morning pages” should happen whenever your heart, soul and brain are ready to tell the truth.  I think, too, it’s important to consider whether you are making pages as an artistic experience or for soul care.  Are you sketching, collaging and making art OR are you problem solving?   Are you articulating emotions or capturing story?  Or maybe still trying to discover what your emotions are in the first place?  All are valid ways to use a journal.
Personally, I write first thing in the morning when my brain is active and my true thoughts are ready to spill.  I paint/create/make and write for other humans (not my self) later in the morning or afternoon.  I know of at least one class attendee who makes pages in the evening and into the wee hours of the morning.  Night owls be free!

Identify when your mind is sharp and when creativity is flowing.
Knowing your own best practices is a great way to make the most of journal-keeping.

When I discover who I am, I’ll be free.
