On Deserts and Decluttering

25 January 2016 headed home to Georgia after a glorious time in the desert. This little corner captures the experience for me. @bybun and @bkasstle thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your workshops exploded my practice. I haven't been this excited to get in the studio in a long time. Also, the pen work. I can't stop! @dreamdiggerstudio Tracie - Amazing gathering. #ebbandflow #BEinyourlife

“Deserts unclutter the soul.”

Alicia Britt Chole 40 Days of Decrease

I was recently in the desert for an art retreat called The Creative Nomad.

[Good Golly!! Tracie Hanson of Dream Digger Studio puts on quite the experience.  Do yourself a favor and keep an eye out for her next event.  You won’t regret it!]

I came home with inspiration, some new techniques and a list of lessons from the desert.   Roxanne Coble and Brian Kasstle were wonderful instructors.  I haven’t put down the white pens or the black gesso since I got home.

27 January 2016 Revisting pages from @dreamdiggerstudio's #creativenomadretreat last week. This is a corner of one of the spreads from @bkasstle 's Totem workshop. I can't get over the depth and layers. And I can't stop adding detail work. #thepagesknow #vulture #fox #snake

This trip was a perfect transition into the Lenten season with it’s focus on 40 day fasts in the desert and sacrifice and decrease.  It all seems so dreary and intense.  But like the desert, this season is deceptive; it seems barren and dry, and is actually teeming with life.

I love the desert.  It clarifies my vision and shakes things down to the bones.

I chose this Lenten devotional this year.

I had already purposed to participate in the #40bagsin40days challenge at White House Black Shutters, so I combined the two.  It’s a good pairing.  The pull to simplify has been strong and I love when what is happening in my spiritual life is in alignment with what is manifesting in the physical realm.

Let such softening begin

And I love that the devotional focuses on softening our heart so that it may be open.

Simply beautiful.

I leave you today with offerings from my faith practice:

May you enjoy rich insights when you shake things down to the bones.  As you enter desert places may you hunger and thirst for communion and connections.  May you know life and thriving in the desert.

Be in your life,

Betsy

About the Author:

I create containers for words and paint and I fill them. I craft safe, sacred spaces for people to wrestle, create, heal and shout from the mountain tops.

And I teach people to do all of these things for themselves.
